28. Sun Shusheng Sun Shusheng, a native of Ningbo in the Ming Dynasty, came from a poor family and made a living by teaching, earning only a few taels of silver a year. Later, he lost his job and worked as a copying worker in a family surnamed Zhang in Tangxi. There was a maid in the Zhang family who came to court him at night, but Sun seriously rejected her. The maid went to fool around with the teacher again. The teacher was fired during the Dragon Boat Festival because the sores could not be cured. Sun is a substitute teacher. One day I met my uncle at Jiangkou, and my uncle said to him: "I went to ask the city god because my son was sick, and I dreamed that the city god was checking the list of people who were exempt from starvation. I secretly asked the person who read the list: 'Why did Sun be removed from the starving list?' He said: 'When this man was forty-six years old, he should have starved to death, but because he refused to elope with a certain woman on the night of April 18 this year, he was given 24 years of life, and his blessings were changed, and he became a wealthy family. I am happy for you. Later, the number of people who invited Sun to be a teacher increased day by day, and they could get more than 100 taels of silver every year. In the thirty-sixth year of the Ming Dynasty, Sun was forty-six years old, and the price of rice soared that year, starving many people to death, and the Sun family was more than wealthy. By the time his children and grandchildren came of age, the Sun family was already a wealthy family. Sun Shusheng himself lived to be in his seventies and died without illness.
